Da das vergangene Job Symposium durch unsere Referenten und das interessierte Publikum ein großer Erfolg war, gibt es zu Beginn des neuen Jahres die zweite Auflage dieser Veranstaltung.

Aus diesem Grund lädt das Student Chapter des Studienganges Human Factors Euch ganz herzlich am 23.01. zum Job Symposium 2012 ein!

Um 18.30 Uhr werden in der Halle V der TU Berlin Experten aus den Bereichen Medizintechnik (Dräger), Forschung im Automobil (VW), Rail Human Factors (DLR) und Quality and Usability (T-Labs) über ihre Arbeit, Erfahrungen sowie Möglichkeiten im Berufsfeld für Human Factors Experten berichten.
Im Rahmen von anregenden Diskussionen mit den Referenten, habt ihr außerdem die Chance weitere spezifische Fragen zu stellen und Euch direkt auszutauschen!

A 99$ eye tracker

Eye tracking is a very exploited technology used in many different research contexts to probe perceptual and cognitive processes. However current gaze trackers are expensive and have strong limitations. Most commercial eye trackers are designed to observe the gaze patterns of users interacting with fixed digital monitors. In addition, the accuracy of these devises decrease rapidly if the subject move during the experiment.
As we were interested in analyzing gaze pattern of subjects interacting in a NATURAL way with PAPER documents, solutions that could potentially relax these limitations have been investigated. After testingdifferent remote setups, we built a wearable eye tracking device and tested it in a reading experiment on paper documents. The prototype is constructed with low cost off-the-shelf components. It integrates two cameras and an infrared LED in a pair of glasses. We used a hacked Sony Playstation camera to track the pupil of the subject and a commercial board camera to look at the scene and track the paper document.
The results obtained with this first prototype are very encouraging and show that we perhaps don’t need to spend several thousands of euros to buy an expensive commercial device in order to conduct eye tracking studies. We really hope that this device will inspire people coming from different fields and allow them to start working on new eye tracking projects.

Youri Marko is a research assistant in the/ Peripheral Systems Laboratory/ at /EPFL/ (/Ecole Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland/) where he works on printing techniques and color prediction models in order to develop new security solutions for printed documents. He obtained his Master of Science MSc in Microengineering in February 2011 at /EPFL/. During his Master Thesis (“/Design of an Eye-Tracking System for Analyzing Reading Behaviours/”), he developed a 99$ eye tracker. Youri is particularly interested in human-computer interfaces, computer vision, design and image processing. He is currently looking for a challenging position where he could work on interdisciplinary projects.”

Interaction research (TAUCHI)

SPEAKER: Markku Turunen

I will present an overvirew of multimodal interaction research activities at the Tampere Unit for Computer-Human Interaction (TAUCHI). University of Tampere is one of the largest universities in Finland, with about 14.500 students. It is a full-scale university with nine schools. As a sizeable part of the School of Information Sciences, Tampere Unit for Human-Computer Interaction (TAUCHI) consists of 45 staff members. It is the largest research unit in its area in Finland and one of the largest in the world. The unit it has been identified as the “as the strongest Finnish group in HCI” in the report of Academy of the Finland. TAUCHI is further divided into four research groups, Multimodal Interaction, Emotions, Sociality, and Computing, Speech-based and Pervasive Interaction Group, and Visual Interaction research Group.
I will introduce the research activities of these group, and provide some detailed examples from relevant case studies of the Speech-based and Pervasive Interaction Group.

Im Rahmen des prometei Kolloquiums wird Jörg Leonhardt von der Deutschen Flugsicherung GmbH (DFS) wird zum Thema “Von Human Error zur Performance Variabilität” einen sehr Interessanten Vortrag halten. Alle Interessierten sind herzlich eingeladen!

“In der Fliegerei, wie in anderen Hoch-Risiko-Organisationen, wird der Human Error oftmals als Ursache für Vorfälle gesehen. Der Mensch ist der Schwachpunkt in einem ansonsten sicheren System.
Die Idee, Human Errors als Erklärung für Vorfälle und Unfälle zu nutzen, führt in den meisten Fällen zu Maßnahmen, die sehr kurz greifen und wenig Wirkung zeigen.
Die Beschreibung von Vorfällen in einer linearen Sichtweise – einer Fehlerkette – wird der Komplexität und Interaktivität der Organisation und des Arbeitsfeldes nicht gerecht. Performance Variabilität hingegen beschreibt die Anpas-sungsfähigkeit des Menschen an sich ständig ändernde Umgebungsbedingungen und den Umgang mit sich widersprechenden Zielen.

Der Vortrag soll anregen, die zuvor beschriebene Sichtweise zu ändern und Einblicke in ein anderes Verständnis von Human Performance und Safety in hochkomplexen Organisationen geben.”

The Human Factors Expert: A Key Component in Forensic Investigation and Litigation

ABOUT THE WEBINAR

In this webinar, Marc Resnick will address what every HF/E expert NEEDS to know about human factors/ergonomics in the legal environment.

Legal professionals don’t think the same way HF/E professionals do—lawyers, judges, or juries. Less experienced HF/E forensic practitioners may find that there are many traps that can hurt their ability to be an effective expert. This webinar will introduce HF/E practitioners interested in becoming forensics experts to many of these traps and some best practices for how to avoid them. Experienced forensic experts will gain ideas about how to improve their practice.

Topics include tips for interacting with lawyers, judges, and jurors; adjusting traditional HF/E methods to be most applicable and accepted in the legal domain; and how to balance the objectivity one needs to maintain as an HF/E professional and an advocate for the client.

ABOUT THE PRESENTER

Marc Resnick is a professor of human factors at Bentley University in Waltham, MA. His research and teaching focuses on human cognition and behavior in complex situations. He has worked in the areas of enterprise systems, health care, space flight, and Web 2.0 business. He also serves on the Executive Council of the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society.

An experienced HF/E forensics expert, Resnick has been retained on more than 100 cases related to human factors/ergonomics for both plaintiff and defense attorneys in state and federal courts. He conducts a workshop at the HFES Annual Meeting on how to be an effective human factors expert. Resnick has published several forensics-related papers in various publications and has been an active member of the HFES Forensics Professional Group.

He has long-standing research programs in two fields, human factors and human-machine systems and cognitive neuroscience of attention. He has merged his interests in both fields by developing the field of neuroergonomics, which he defines as the study of brain and behavior at work.

The Center of Excellence in Neuroergonomics, Technology, and Cognition (CENTEC) was established at George Mason University in 2010. CENTEC scientists carry out research and training in different areas of neuroscience applied to the study of human performance in tasks representative of work and other everyday settings.

CENTEC projects include: neuroimaging (fMRI, ERP) studies of complex perception, cognition, and action; molecular genetics of decision-making; neural bases of human-human and human-automation trust; neuroadaptive training and brain computer interfaces; use of brain and cognitive stimulation techniques for enhancing learning; and related topics.

In this talk I will provide an overview of the development of neuroergonomics and a sampling of CENTEC research topics.
